Private James Keating

 

James Keating was born on 18 May 1896 at Ahabeg, Listowel, County Kerry, the last of at least seven children of farm labourer and tinsmith Patrick Keating and his wife Ellen (née Clifford). At the time of the 1911 Census he was working as a labourer on the farm of Joanna O'Sullivan and family at Shanavally, Arabela, County Kerry.

Keating enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Belfast on 22 August 1918 (Corps of Hussars No.72136). He was described as being 5' 3" tall, with a fresh complexion, brown hair and brown eyes, with a scar on his right wrist. He stated that he was 23 years old, was born at Lixnaw, County Kerry, and worked as a labourer.

Keating was reported to have deserted from the regiment's reserve base at Antrim on 8 September 1918. It is not known if he was subsequentially apprehended.
